Public Relations is the art of translating stories. Researching topic trends, building media relationships, editing for delivery specs, and aligning content with client goals are just a few of the steps involved in turning ideas into media coverage.
Coordinating all this work is a key part of any PR department. Deadlines are real, and when you’re juggling multiple campaigns, schedules, and timelines, it can quickly become a lot to manage. That’s why we are thrilled to welcome Chelsey Barnes as public relations coordinator. Motivated, smart, and creative, Chelsey maintains order, fuels the pitching machine, and helps keep clients and editors happy.
Besides being great at her job, Chelsey adds a positive vibe to every situation. Lighting up rooms, turning frowns upside down, and generally making the day better should have also been on her resume. Now we know! And you can, too, through this brief introduction:
QUESTION: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO A LIFE IN PR?
Chelsey: I’ve always had a love for storytelling and recognizing the strengths in others. At the heart of PR, there is a marriage between the two. This is what I love about PR. Every day, I have the opportunity to find client strengths and share their story with those who find it interesting and insightful. I was drawn to PR because I get to shed light on others and be a facilitator in connecting them to their audience.
Q: WE HEAR YOU RUN (HALF) MARATHONS. WHAT’S THAT LIKE?
C: I ran my first ever half marathon a few months ago and honestly, it was a mixture of joy and tears. I went from never running more than 3.1 miles to running 13.1. I actually joined a running class to train. The group had over 100 people participating and we would meet every weekend to run, gradually increasing distances. The first distance was two miles, and I couldn’t even make it through without stopping and puking at the end of last mile. However, through determination, goal setting, and a lot of self-pep-talks, I was able to cross the 13.1-mile finish line. I cried. But they were happy tears.
Q: WORD IS YOU’RE ALSO A PHOTOGRAPHER. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE CAPTURED MOMENT.
C: I attended a large faith conference with over 17,000 young adults and was asked to take photos of memorable moments, small and large, that captured the “feel” of the event. One night, a big-name band performed worship songs that energized the crowd. I was able to capture this moment of someone holding up their hands in praise. I just feel like it totally captures the youthfulness and passion of my generation.
Q: WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST PLEASANT SURPRISE ABOUT WORKING AT ELEMENT SO FAR?
C: I think the culture of Element is the most surprising. Bring your dog to work? Beer/wine on tap? Incredibly interesting and quirky coworkers? Yes, please, to all the above! It is such a joy to be an ‘Elemental’ and learn from such a creative group of fun-loving people. I’ve learned so much about myself in the short time I’ve worked here.
